In this article we’ll be talking about…

  • Why most QSR promotions fail to create loyal customers
  • The difference between attracting customers and keeping them
  • Five ways to encourage second and third visits
  • The metrics that show whether a promotion really worked
  • How customer behaviour helps you build smarter promotions

Most QSR promotions are designed to create a short-term sales spike. A discount brings in new customers, sales increase for a few days, and then everything returns to normal. The problem isn’t that these promotions don’t work, it’s more that many are designed to win the first order instead of encouraging the second and third repeat orders. So the real goal should be all about building repeat visits instead of once-offs.

Focus on building habits, not discounts

A once-off discount often attracts customers looking for the cheapest deal. When the offer ends, so does their interest. Goodbye customer. Instead, we should be creating promotions that encourage customers to come back. A time-limited reward on their next purchase or loyalty points that unlock a reward after a few visits gives customers a compelling reason to return. Our goal should therefore be to make the first order the start of the relationship, not the end of it.

Reward customer behaviour

Not every customer should receive the same promotion. For example, a loyal customer, (let’s say someone who hasn’t ordered in three weeks), and a first-time customer have different needs. Using customer behaviour instead of sending the same promotion to everyone makes your marketing more relevant. Think about it –  you could send a favourite meal offer to a customer who hasn’t ordered recently or reward regular customers with an exclusive bonus instead of another discount. This creates a better experience while protecting your margins.

Measure what really matters

Many QSRs judge promotions by the number of orders received during a campaign. But did those customers come back?

Track metrics such as second-visit rates, time between visits, repeat purchase frequency and revenue generated over the following 30, 60 and 90 days. These measurements reveal whether your promotion created lasting customer value or simply discounted orders that would have happened anyway.

Turn customer data into repeat business

The best promotions are always running in the background. With YUMBI, customer data from every ordering channel creates a complete customer profile. This allows you to automatically send personalised offers based on real behaviour, whether it’s welcoming a new customer, re-engaging someone who’s gone quiet, or rewarding loyal guests.

The result is simple. Instead of chasing one-off sales, you’re building lasting customer relationships that grow revenue over time. And that is the happy taste of success.
