May is the month to celebrate the very popular Hamburger! From humble beginnings this mainstay fast food favourite has risen to superstardom. But where did it originate from?
There are many people who would like to stake their claim to the invention. However, the name “hamburger” derives from the city of Hamburg in Germany. Some residents of Hamburg made their way to the shores of the United States during the 18th century. Many of them brought a snack called the “Hamburgh sausage.” This snack, combined a meatball similar to the Swedish meatball with a slice of bread for utensil-free handling.
The first known restaurateurs to transform this European sandwich into the sesame seed bun and wide patty combination were the owners of the White Castle restaurants in the United States.
These days the Hamburger can be found in thousands of different locations with variations that range from the amazing to the simply bizarre. Burgers are one of the ultimate comfort foods and easily one of the top selling fast foods.
Hamburger Month is a great time to indulge in your burger favorites and explore new variations.
